In January of this year, IMO 2020 regulations took into eff3ect. IMO 2020 regulations essentially regulate the amount of sulphur in marine fuel.

The new regulations dictate that there be a maximum of .5 percent sulphur in marine fuel.

 

How does IMO 2020 affect Ship-to-ship supply chains

  • For one thing, Ship-to-ship supply refuelers may be struggling to obtain clean, sulfur-free fuel. Refineries, and thus Ship-to-ship refuelers have a choice, have a choice, offering Marine Gas Oil, or very low sulfur oil blends.

    VSOL blends are still an unknown quality in the marine market and the price of VSOL fuel has been fluctuating significantly. At first, they spiked as 2020 neared. Now they are down around 33 percent as shippers are learning to deal with low sulphur fuel.

  • There has also been an interest in installing scrubbers. The IMO 2020 does not affect ships with scrubbers.

    In order to comply with IMO 2020, ships can install scrubbers, essentially systems to strip the sulphur emissions from ships engines and boilers.

    At first interest in scrubbers was limited, but now companies are spending large money on scrubbers to use traditional sulphur fuels without being fined for breaking the new regulations.
